Exercise Barrow Clump (Ring Ditch evaluation)

8th - 26th July 2019

A second year of assessment of the effects of ground pressure of military vehicles on the archaeology of Salisbury Plain. This time its prehistoric where we will look at some Early Bronze Age ring ditches – all that remains of a series of round-barrows. What is left? How well is it preserved?

Jobs will include: excavation, finds process assistance, topographical, site drawing and much more
We will be camping and it is Self-funding (for food) though we are working on this. There may be the potential for veterans to stay with Help for Heroes at Tedworth House. We will also try to gain the usual permission for shower usage there too.

For anyone that has worked at Barrow Clump on Ex Beowulf – the project should be just like this. We will be supported by a major Commercial Unit.

Penally Trenches and WW1 landscape

4th-21st June 2019

This Project will investigate the First World War landscape that makes up Penally Camp and the surrounding landscape.

We will be working with Dyfed Archaeology Trust and Operation Nightingale to try and interpret and contextualise this training landscape. Something that we have become very proficient in of late.

Exercise Angus Holdfast

August 2019

We will once again return to the Barry Buddon to continue with our excavations of a First World War Training Area.

We will be looking this year across the feature to some parallel trenched that have recently been uncovered in order to contextualise them within the wider landscape.

This project has become a firm favourite due to the links that we have with Dundee Universitys’s College of Life Sciences.
